Maintenance to Extend the Life of Your Water Heater Heater
To keep your hot water tank clean and in tip-top working order, You will need to drain the tank yearly. This can negate the build up of debris in the tank and will extend the life of your water heater tank by a number of years. To empty water from the tank, you may need a standard hose and an area to securely dump up to 75 gallons warm water, at the curb of the street will do fine.
The first thing you must do is cut the power source towards the tank at the main panel or turn off the gas valve. Following the power or fuel is turn off, attach the water hose to the drain spigot. The drain spigot appears like a normal hose spigot externally your house and will pay a regular hose.
Run the hose to the outside of your house, now you will be ready to turn off the cold water supply valve to the tank, and open any hot water faucets. This will allow the water being drained to be replaced by air entering the tank through to faucet you turned on. You now are ready to open the drain spigot at the bottom of the water tank. After the tank is drained, open the cold water valve to begin refilling the tank while leaving the drain spigot open. This will flush any remaining debris in the bottom of the tank.
When the water appearing out of the hose is clean, close the drain spigot. Allow the tank to refill. Make sure to leave the water faucet on inside the house or the warm water tank will pressurize with air. When the tank is refilled, you are ready to turn the power back on or turn the gas valve back on and relight the heater.
